Popular Myths About Billiards

These myths have plagued the game of billiards for many, many years.

You've Got To Hold Your Cue Six Inches From the Balance Point!
Willie Mosconi developed the theory of the standard balance point in a book in 1954. The real problem with this theory is that is based on his measurements, and he was only 5’4” tall with 26” arms, a far cry from the average measurements of men today. This theory is also infective for players that hold their cues at the back of the wrap or the back of the cue, like Jim Rempe and David Howard. The length of the player’s arms and the place at which they hold the cue with both make this theory fall apart. A good player could eliminate their needed stroking room if they were 6’3” and trying to hold the cue closer to the wrap.

The Longer the Bridge or Heavier the Cue!
In the game of billiards the cue is only in contact with the ball for about 1/100th of a second. So why do so many players feel that they need to turn or twist their back end of the cue while hitting the ball? Does that extra twist really have any impact on your ability to play the game, or are you just trying to look cool? As for the theory about a heavier cue, if that were really true they would need to have a 50 pound break cue to get the best results. For those that think a longer cue is better, why not go all the way and have a 50 foot cue?

Transferring Spin
Remember that during a game of billiards the balls are only in contact for approximately 1/100th of a second. It is not really possible to transfer spin from one ball to another ball in such a short amount of time. You can see this yourself by conducting the following experiment. Place two stripped balls on the billiard table with the stripes of both balls facing the same direction. Place either an extreme right or extreme left on the first ball. If the spin is really transferred, the second ball should end up spinning away in the opposite direction. In fact, the second ball will just shoot straight instead. The area where the balls touch, and the time they have contact, is just not sufficient to transfer that spin.

Swing your cue until it feels right, THEN hit the cue ball
Swinging their cue until it “feels right” is another common belief that many players have. This is similar to thinking you will hit a target more successfully by waving your gun at it until you are ready to shoot. When you are in motion, you are unable to firmly lock on your target. By staying in motion by swinging your cue, you make it almost impossible to lock on your target and hit the ball correctly.

The Cue Never Misses - It's so good you can't believe it!
This is probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard about the game of billiards, that the cue never misses. Try this experiment: Place your magic cue on the table and step back. Did it make the perfect shot? The truth is that a cue is not what makes the shot for the player. Of course you need to have a good cue, but after that the shot is determined by your skills.
