Pocket billiards, commonly referred to as pool
The game of Pocket billiards has six pockets,
one in each of the
corners and two in the middle. (One on each side of course) Here's an
interesting little known fact of how the term pool came to be. Believe it
or not the common view of a pool room with guys drinking and betting
is how the word came about. Check this humdinger out:
During the late 1800's and
early 1900's pocket billiards was
becoming more and more popular in England so gambling houses would install
pocket billiard tables as another of the entertainments offered to
their patrons. At these gambling houses people would place bets into a common fund
called a "pool" and the winners would receive their payouts from the
"pool" funds and thus the gambling house became known as "pool
rooms" (now you can see where this is going). The billiards tables proved
so popular they
ended up becoming the main entertainment at the gambling houses and
hence the name "pool room" came to refer to the place where
you played pocket billiards, and eventually the British name game of
pocket billiards became known simply as "pool."
